Abstract

Recent global health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digitalization of the workplace and highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration and knowledge sharing across global health communities. To bridge this gap, the WHO developed an online collaboration platform the Hive, to provide a safe space for public health experts to connect, share information and access valuable resources.

The SDSC successfully completed an expertise mandate for the WHO Hive team, conducting a comprehensive analysis of multiple digital platforms and datasets to identify evidence-based optimization opportunities. Following the initial assessment, SDSC delivered actionable recommendations focused on feature enhancements and AI solution integration. The engagement also included iterative workshops, where recommendations were refined collaboratively with the WHO Hive team, ensuring practical implementation plans aligned with organizational objectives.

Motivation

Recent global health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digitalization of the workplace and highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration and knowledge sharing across global health communities. To bridge this gap, the WHO developed an online collaboration platform the Hive, to provide a safe space for public health experts to connect, share information and access valuable resources. To facilitate collaboration the Hive provides four key features:

  • Community space
  • Chat and discussion forum
  • Video conferencing
  • Hive drive document repository and co-development

Digital platforms have become increasingly vital for facilitating communication, and the rapidly changing media landscape has significantly affected how information is consumed, particularly during health emergencies. Conflicting information shared or information lacking in scientific rigour can be exploited to undermine the health response and damage trust. The Hive aims to provide a safe environment for multi-disciplinary experts to connect with the skills, knowledge and experience of other users with the questions and concerns they may have to better prepare for and respond to health emergencies.
